The guys in the groups may be battle-tested troops. But most military bands hit about as hard as a night of Gilbert & Sullivan. Check out Playboy’s “Battle of the Battle Bands” feature, and you’ll see what I mean: Cheesed-out soft-rock covers, high-school dance filler, Marley tributes that would make the man roll over in his ganja-lined grave.
Then, inexplicably, there’s Beyond the Ruins. These five trashing, growling, screeching, shredding Marines from Okinawa are hardly the best musicians of the lot. But they’re the only ones liable to get a mosh pit going. They turn the magazine’s battle of the bands into an ol’school sonic beatdown. Scream along to their latest little ditty, “Just Die.” (It takes about 50 seconds to get going.)
Now that is what a military band should sound like.
